Particle Pollution
What Is It?
Particle Pollution is known as Particulate Matter. It is a mixture of microscopic solids and liquid droplets suspended in the air. The particles are so small it takes about seven particles to match the thickness of a hair strand and about nine particles to match the width of beach sand. |
 |
How Does It Form?
Particulate Matter is made up of acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metal, soil, dust particles and allergens (such as fragments of pollens or mold spores).
 |
Effects In Us And The Environment.
When the particles get into your lungs, they build up in the air sacks and makes it much more difficult to breath. Also, most particles get past the respiratory defence. It's similar to smoke from cigarettes, but instead of burning and manipulating the defences, the particles pass by without being detected. |
What We Can Do To Prevent or Reduce Particle Pollution.
You can reduce or eliminate the use of a fireplace and/or wood stove. Avoid using gas-powered equipment. Also, avoid burning leaves, trash and other materials. If you have a car or truck replace the air filter and oil regularly.
